OUR OWN GOOD SHEPHERD
BIBLE READING: John 10: 1 – 11

When did Christ speak these words? I have often thought that it could have been straight after Jesus found the man of yesterday’s reading. Because of his testimony (9:30–35) the Jewish leaders had put him out of their meeting and made him feel very unwanted.

Verse 35 tells us that when Jesus heard about this, he went and found the man and showed himself to him. It seems the man had not actually seen Christ up till then.

Can you picture Jesus talking to him? Did Christ put his arm around the man? Did he say something like this: ‘They have put you out. They have made you feel unwanted. Don’t worry about that. I am the door, by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved. Was that how it all happened?

Jesus then went on to talk further about himself as the Good Shepherd. Can you make a list of all the things the Shepherd does? Read the verses again and also verses 14–16 and see all that the Good Shepherd does for his sheep. You will see that there is nothing the Shepherd would not do for us.

He guides us; he knows us personally. We are not just a number to him. He knows our names. He sees our needs and he constantly cares for us. Verse 11 tells us that the Good Shepherd continually gives his life for the sheep. This means that he not only gave his life for us once on Calvary’s cross but that he is day-by-day spending his time caring for us. Isn’t that wonderful? That is own personal loving Good Shepherd.

A QUESTION:

Do you listen for the Shepherd’s voice?
