17:1 和合本 設筵滿屋,大家相爭,不如有塊乾餅,大家相安。
KJV Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
ASV Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, Than a house full of feasting with strife.
YLT Better `is' a dry morsel, and rest with it, Than a house full of the sacrifices of strife.
BBE Better a bit of dry bread in peace, than a house full of feasting and violent behaviour.
WEB Better is a dry morsel with quietness,
17:2 和合本 僕人辦事聰明,必管轄貽羞之子,又在眾子中同分產業。
KJV A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
ASV A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, And shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren.
YLT A wise servant ruleth over a son causing shame, And in the midst of brethren He apportioneth an inheritance.
BBE A servant who does wisely will have rule over a son causing shame, and will have his part in the heritage among brothers.
WEB A servant who deals wisely will rule over a son who causes shame,
17:3 和合本 鼎為煉銀,爐為煉金;惟有耶和華熬煉人心。
KJV The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
ASV The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; But Jehovah trieth the hearts.
YLT A refining pot `is' for silver, and a furnace for gold, And the trier of hearts `is' Jehovah.
BBE The heating-pot is for silver and the oven-fire for gold, but the Lord is the tester of hearts.

17:4 和合本 行惡的,留心聽奸詐之言;說謊的,側耳聽邪惡之語。
KJV A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
ASV An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; `And' a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
YLT An evil doer is attentive to lips of vanity, Falsehood is giving ear to a mischievous tongue.
BBE A wrongdoer gives attention to evil lips, and a man of deceit gives ear to a damaging tongue.
WEB An evil-doer heeds wicked lips.
17:5 和合本 戲笑窮人的,是辱沒造他的主;幸災樂禍的,必不免受罰。
KJV Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
ASV Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; `And' he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.
YLT Whoso is mocking at the poor Hath reproached his Maker, Whoso is rejoicing at calamity is not acquitted.
BBE Whoever makes sport of the poor puts shame on his Maker; and he who is glad because of trouble will not go free from punishment.

17:6 和合本 子孫為老人的冠冕;父親是兒女的榮耀。
KJV Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

YLT Sons' sons `are' the crown of old men, And the glory of sons `are' their fathers.

17:7 和合本 愚頑人說美言本不相宜,何況君王說謊話呢?
KJV Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

YLT Not comely for a fool is a lip of excellency, Much less for a noble a lip of falsehood.
BBE Fair words are not to be looked for from a foolish man, much less are false lips in a ruler.

17:8 和合本 賄賂在餽送的人眼中看為寶玉,隨處運動都得順利。
KJV A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
ASV A bribe is `as' a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
YLT A stone of grace `is' the bribe in the eyes of its possessors, Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
BBE An offering of money is like a stone of great price in the eyes of him who has it: wherever he goes, he does well.
WEB A bribe is a precious stone in the eyes of him who gives it;
17:9 和合本 遮掩人過的,尋求人愛;屢次挑錯的,離間密友。
KJV He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
ASV He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends.
YLT Whoso is covering transgression is seeking love, And whoso is repeating a matter Is separating a familiar friend.
BBE He who keeps a sin covered is looking for love; but he who keeps on talking of a thing makes division between friends.
WEB He who covers an offense promotes love;
17:10 和合本 一句責備話深入聰明人的心,強如責打愚昧人一百下。
KJV A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
ASV A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding Than a hundred stripes into a fool.
YLT Rebuke cometh down on the intelligent More than a hundred stripes on a fool.
BBE A word of protest goes deeper into one who has sense than a hundred blows into a foolish man.

17:11 和合本 惡人只尋背叛,所以必有嚴厲的使者奉差攻擊他。
KJV An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
ASV An evil man seeketh only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
YLT An evil man seeketh only rebellion, And a fierce messenger is sent against him.
BBE An uncontrolled man is only looking for trouble, so a cruel servant will be sent against him.

17:12 和合本 寧可遇見丟崽子的母熊,不可遇見正行愚妄的愚昧人。
KJV Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
ASV Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly.
YLT The meeting of a bereaved bear by a man, And -- not a fool in his folly.
BBE It is better to come face to face with a bear whose young ones have been taken away than with a foolish man acting foolishly.

17:13 和合本 以惡報善的,禍患必不離他的家。
KJV Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
ASV Whoso rewardeth evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house.
YLT Whoso is returning evil for good, Evil moveth not from his house.
BBE If anyone gives back evil for good, evil will never go away from his house.

17:14 和合本 分爭的起頭如水放開,所以,在爭鬧之先必當止息爭競。
KJV The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
ASV The beginning of strife is `as' when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.
YLT The beginning of contention `is' a letting out of waters, And before it is meddled with leave the strife.
BBE The start of fighting is like the letting out of water: so give up before it comes to blows.

17:15 和合本 定惡人為義的,定義人為惡的,這都為耶和華所憎惡。
KJV He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
ASV He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.
YLT Whoso is justifying the wicked, And condemning the righteous, Even both of these `are' an abomination to Jehovah.
BBE He who gives a decision for the evil-doer and he who gives a decision against the upright, are equally disgusting to the Lord.

17:16 和合本 愚昧人既無聰明,為何手拿價銀買智慧呢?
KJV Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
ASV Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding?
YLT Why `is' this -- a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, And a heart there is none?
BBE How will money in the hand of the foolish get him wisdom, seeing that he has no sense?

17:17 和合本 朋友乃時常親愛,弟兄為患難而生。
KJV A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
ASV A friend loveth at all times; And a brother is born for adversity.
YLT At all times is the friend loving, And a brother for adversity is born.
BBE A friend is loving at all times, and becomes a brother in times of trouble.
WEB A friend loves at all times;
17:18 和合本 在鄰舍面前擊掌作保乃是無知的人。
KJV A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
ASV A man void of understanding striketh hands, And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor.
YLT A man lacking heart is striking hands, A surety he becometh before his friend.
BBE A man without sense gives his hand in an agreement, and makes himself responsible before his neighbour.

17:19 和合本 喜愛爭競的,是喜愛過犯;高立家門的,乃自取敗壞。
KJV He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
ASV He loveth transgression that loveth strife: He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction.
YLT Whoso is loving transgression is loving debate, Whoso is making high his entrance is seeking destruction.
BBE The lover of fighting is a lover of sin: he who makes high his doorway is looking for destruction.
WEB He who loves disobedience loves strife.
17:20 和合本 心存邪僻的,尋不著好處;舌弄是非的,陷在禍患中。
KJV He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
ASV He that hath a wayward heart findeth no good; And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
YLT The perverse of heart findeth not good, And the turned in his tongue falleth into evil.
BBE Nothing good comes to him whose heart is fixed on evil purposes: and he who has an evil tongue will come to trouble.
WEB One who has a perverse heart doesn't find prosperity,
17:21 和合本 生愚昧子的,必自愁苦;愚頑人的父毫無喜樂。
KJV He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
ASV He that begetteth a fool `doeth it' to his sorrow; And the father of a fool hath no joy.
YLT Whoso is begetting a fool hath affliction for it, Yea, the father of a fool rejoiceth not.
BBE He who has an unwise son gets sorrow for himself, and the father of a foolish son has no joy.
WEB He who becomes the father of a fool grieves.
17:22 和合本 喜樂的心乃是良藥;憂傷的靈使骨枯乾。
KJV A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
ASV A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones.
YLT A rejoicing heart doth good to the body, And a smitten spirit drieth the bone.
BBE A glad heart makes a healthy body, but a crushed spirit makes the bones dry.

17:23 和合本 惡人暗中受賄賂,為要顛倒判斷。
KJV A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
ASV A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom, To pervert the ways of justice.
YLT A bribe from the bosom the wicked taketh, To turn aside the paths of judgment.
BBE A sinner takes an offering out of his robe, to get a decision for himself in a cause.
WEB A wicked man receives a bribe in secret,
17:24 和合本 明哲人眼前有智慧;愚昧人眼望地極。
KJV Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
ASV Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding; But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
YLT The face of the intelligent `is' to wisdom, And the eyes of a fool -- at the end of the earth.
BBE Wisdom is before the face of him who has sense; but the eyes of the foolish are on the ends of the earth.
WEB Wisdom is before the face of one who has understanding,
17:25 和合本 愚昧子使父親愁煩,使母親憂苦。
KJV A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
ASV A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her that bare him.
YLT A provocation to his father `is' a foolish son, And bitterness to her that bare him.
BBE A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitter pain to her who gave him birth.

17:26 和合本 刑罰義人為不善;責打君子為不義。
KJV Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
ASV Also to punish the righteous is not good, `Nor' to smite the noble for `their' uprightness.
YLT Also, to fine the righteous is not good, To smite nobles for uprightness.
BBE To give punishment to the upright is not good, or to give blows to the noble for their righteousness.
WEB Also to punish the righteous is not good,
17:27 和合本 寡少言語的,有知識;性情溫良的,有聰明。
KJV He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
ASV He that spareth his words hath knowledge; And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
YLT One acquainted with knowledge is sparing his words, And the cool of temper `is' a man of understanding.
BBE He who has knowledge says little: and he who has a calm spirit is a man of good sense.
WEB He who spares his words has knowledge.
17:28 和合本 愚昧人若靜默不言也可算為智慧;閉口不說也可算為聰明。
KJV Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
ASV Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; When he shutteth his lips, he is `esteemed as' prudent.
YLT Even a fool keeping silence is reckoned wise, He who is shutting his lips intelligent!
BBE Even the foolish man, when he keeps quiet, is taken to be wise: when his lips are shut he is credited with good sense.
WEB Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise.
