The Faith of the Servant
This story certainly demanded great faith from the servant (probably Eliezer, though his name is not mentioned in this chapter). When he arrives and stands by the well outside the city, he prays for guidance (“good fortune”) – if translated literally, he asks God to “make this day happen” (הַקְרֵה-נָא לְפָנַי הַיּוֹם) (Gen.24:12). It’s important to note that this is the very first prayer for divine guidance in the Bible.

Who was the “man”?
Abraham sent Eliezer with a promise, God “will send His angel before you” (Gen.24:7). Rabbi Uri Sherki points out, the angel whom Abraham was talking about is seen clearly in the Scripture. Talking about the servant, the Torah calls him “היא-עבד ha-eved” (is servant, slave); however, later in this same story, the Torah refers to a mysterious “ish”, (man) (Gen.24:21), instead of a servant. This word, ish, is often used to refer to an angel in the Torah.

Thus, there are actually two on this journey: ha-eved, who asks for God’s guidance, and the mysterious ish, who provides this guidance. This possibly explains Rebecca’s quick decision: Rebecca “followed the man” (Gen.24:61),
