The original meaning refers to abnormal hearing, such as the loss of hearing in a deaf person. It can also be interpreted as inattentive listening, which is caused by ones negligence, misunderstanding or overheard; it can be regarded as unwilling to listen, and therefore "disobeys the voice of God", so people heard Gods commands, warnings, and calls are all kept silent.
